Step Into My Kitchen

My kitchen…it is what it is. It is definitely the trade off for the roomy front porch I so enjoy. The footprint of the room is a smidgen bigger than the original kitchen in 1920….maybe…and what is life without a challenge. I’m not sure filling it with the many treasures of my past is the best solution, but it makes me happy…and that is a good thing.

A neat panaramic view my hero experimented with…yes, my wall and counters are straight…mostly

No pantry? I have really put my wrought iron baker’s rack from Italy to use…I still really want a pantry.

Another bit of strangeness …a full height cooking hearth. By 1920 most city folk did not cook over open flame but apparently the original owners also enjoyed a vintage touch.

Limited cabinet space?….I have to admit I could have all the storage in the world but I would still prefer my pot rack.

My hand painted German pie safe still makes me swoon…I just had to find room for it.

The Kitchen…that is where memories happen!

  1. You have made a beautiful kitchen with the many treasures you possess! I absolutely love the hand painted German pie safe- my Gram had an original very similar to yours and I wish I would have inherited it. The cooking hearth is awesome, I’ve never seen one like this one. My Gram’s kitchen had a huge built in wall oven that was over a hundred years old. Your photos are lovely, the panoramic is great. Perfect photo of the pasta chefs- The Princess is so adorable and totally into the work at hand. Thank-you for sharing your home, always love seeing your treasures.

    1. I saw that pie safe at a bazaar sale when I was living in Germany…and I knew it was coming home with me. I sat in storage for quite a few years as I moved to Japan…and met my husband. I was so glad to see it come off the moving van. The kitchen is a little tight but I find it cozy. Hopefully soon we will have a house with a nice big kitchen.

    1. Most I picked up at flea markets when I lived in Europe…military life can be awesome! I have priced them on line recently and I am glad I bought them when I did. I love them as well!

  3. Your kitchen is filled with things that make you smile and gives you pleasure. That’s what a kitchen is supposed to do. I think it’s charming. Love your collection of rolling pins. ‘-)

    1. Whimsical is a great look in the kitchen. Rolling pins just fascinate me. Such a simple kitchen tool but so essential to life in the past. I just imagine the cookies and pies they helped create.

  4. I love your sweet home and especially that kitchen. My new kitchen is going in right now–very slowly and I’m beginning to wonder if I will love all the newness of it or will I begin “cluttering/designing” it as soon as all the white cabinetry is in.

So sweet, I can’t get enough of your kitchen, Sandi

    1. I vote for the “clutter” but a little extra space would be nice. We will be homeowners again once military retirement is here. Not much reno possible in a rental.

    1. It is! I found the 24 pane window at a junk sale and had visions of an advent calendar but I loved it so much I decided to use it year round. The seed packages were an eBay find!

  7. I spend time on the Houzz forum letting people know wood cabinets can be charming and cozy – your kitchen is a wonderful example of that. I also love my pie safe, not quite from Germany but Amish built. Wonderful job with your space. Here is mine – also vintage with wood cabinets:

  8. I just discovered your blog today and I can’t wait to read more posts. I love your kitchen and all the great pieces that make it so warm and welcoming. I was just wondering, what color are the walls in the kitchen?

    1. Thank you. Your comment really made my day! We love this home like it is our own but for now we are renting. Hopefully this time next year will find us in our own home after military retirement. Not sure of the paint color but I can check the basement…lots of paint cans are there.
