My fellow military wives will understand when I say that military life can seem very temporary. We experience temporary homes, jobs, churches, neighborhoods, states and even countries of residency. The opportunity to put down roots can seem rare and it can sometimes feel like you are always packing or unpacking boxes…and hoping that your treasures arrive in one piece. This week my family took a big step away from temporary and toward permanent with a closing on a house we have grown to love…the very one we are living in now. I am happy to announce this 1920, original classic American Foursquare (the jury is still out in regards to its status as a Sears Kit House) in beautiful downtown Annapolis is officially ours…front porch and all! Let the reno games begin…and make them as easy as an episode of “Property Brothers”.
Let’s celebrate…with Cake…Pumpkin Spice Latte Cake!
The Usual Cast of Characters
1 stick unsalted butter, melted, plus more for pan
1 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
4 teaspoons espresso powder, plus more for dusting
1 1/2 teaspoons Pumpkin-Pie Spice
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
2 large eggs, room temperature
3/4 cup pure pumpkin puree
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
2/3 cup whole milk, room temperature
The Steps to Glory
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-2-inch round cake pan. Line bottom with parchment; butter parchment. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, espresso powder, pumpkin-pie spice, and salt. In another bowl, whisk eggs into pumpkin puree, then whisk in butter, sugars, and milk. Whisk wet ingredients into dry ingredients.
Scrape batter into prepared pan. Bake until top springs back when lightly touched, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes. Turn out onto rack and let cool completely, about 2 hours.
Dust with powdered sugar and a bit of espresso powder…whipped cream would not be a wrong choice
Enjoy on a a beautiful fall afternoon!

Thank you all for serving and am delighted you’re able to put down roots in such a beautiful home and town. Thank you also for the cake recipe..will make as soon as I’ve unfinished packing kitchen boxes. As it stands now, all I can do is heat water in the electric kettle, make coffee and, with the one paring knife I’ve found, cut up peaches and apples.
Life is GOOD!

Very ready to start some reno but as always, it will be a wait. A little pain and beadboard goes a long way however. I can’t wait to show my kitchen!

It’s so nice to connect a face with a blog! All this time I (incorrectly) assumes you were Asian. I also enjoy seeing outdoor pictures of a home. Now when I read your blog I can imagine you writing from an authentic Sears Roebuck home. Do u guys still live there?
